Lindisfarne Castle

This tiny fort was built in 1549 on a rock high above Holy Island to defend the harbour against the Scots. It was completely renovated in romantic style and converted to a perfect residence by the great Edwardian architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1902. It is open daily, except Friday, April to September. Signposted from the A1, Holy Island is reached at low tide across a causeway. Tides can be found out about in local papers and Tourist Information Centres.
